What does the warning on the map and the description in the book exactly mean? Why do those waves occur in the period between november and april?
In what area can you expect these waves to occur? Can you expect them at the location of the accident (see google map)?
You can expect them at the location marked as “shoals extending W. break in periods of ground swell (Nov-Apr)” on the chart, to the west of Peninsule des Terres Basses on Saint Martin. That matches with the area of the accident.
What data do you use for these warnings? What are the warnings based on?
lmray-lolaire charts use data from official hydrographic offices, along with sailing directions and research from numerous sources by [naam 2] These warnings would have been written by [naam 2] . He is the acknowledged expert on Caribbean sailing and respected by the sailing community for his experience. He is in his 90s now but has been researching and sailing the area his entire life. He works with a wide network of sailors, harbourmasters, marina owners who have local knowledge. He also uses scientific or meteorological research by official bodies. He checks their information before adding it to the charts.
I have a map of 2019. Was the situation the same in 2015 (the map that was used then, has it got the same warnings on it?)?
